Rural Medical Clinic & Surgery Clinics!

Jamboooo (Hello) from Tenwek!! Today, Molly was the only one to go on rounds while the rest of us were snoozin'. She got to walk around with Dr. Brady and the ortho team. At around 8:30 we met up with Samuel (our driver) and Jackson (a Kenyan Nurse from the community health clinic). Everyone except Dr. Paul and Jackson (Jackson Scott was replaced with Kenyan Jackson) hopped in the bed of a pick up truck that looked like a paddy wagon and headed to a school where we gave out vaccines and vitamins for babies.

This 2 1/2 hour car ride was unlike any other I've ever been on, and sitting here writing this blog I still feel like I'm rocking back and forth in the back of the truck.

Somehow Molly manages to sleep in every car ride  we take despite the fact that her head bangs against the window every bump we hit, which is quite often

We made two stops on the way to the trip, one for a bathroom stop where Davis, Molly, Lexi, Mel, and I had the pleasure of squeezing the lemon over a squatty potty and smelling the most rank bathroom smells of all time (I definitely gagged when Davis came out of his "stall"). The next stop was to get the vaccines, needles, and a guy (no one could understand his name, but he's in the picture below) that helped check in the women and their babies at the school. The road may have been bumpy and we thought we were gonna tip over at points, but the views were insane. There were wheat, cabbage, corn, etc. fields everywhere you looked.

Post squatty potty experience -- feeling' good

Once we got there, we scoped out the classroom the moms and babies would wait in and learned a few things from Jackson about medicine.

We all got the chance to fill syringes.

Weighing babies
Mel the baby eater ;)

We also got to give oral polio vaccines and retrovirus vaccines which was kinda hard considering the babies were squirmy and their mouths were opened as wide as the size of dime. Jackson gave all the shots.

Cutest baby wrapped in so many layers since it's winter here
At 3:00 we finally closed shop and packed up the car...

... but before we left we went over to the kids who had been waving to us through their classroom windows.

We were quickly surrounded by kids feeling our hair and skin and asking us, "Assist me your watch," meaning give me your watch haha. After awhile of us chasing them and "scaring" them they sat down so we could all introduce ourselves. Then we got to sing the good ole "Rocky Top" for them. They did a song and dance for us and then asked us to "give a word" and "do a Scottish drama" (because apparently we're Scottish???)

After we left, we came back and hung out for a while before dinner. Later, we went to the Many's for dessert and drinks while we debriefed and got to hear a part of their story of how they came to be missionaries here!

Hope you enjoyed this daily recap! Tomorrow we are all going to mud a house!! Goodnight from Tenwek!
