Tenwek Day 3, a day of rest

Beautiful flowers along our path!
Good evening! After the blog post was already up last night, we had some more excitement! Dr. Brady got called to the OR and took Annie and Davis with him. They got to watch a woman's infected arm being amputated! They came back around 1 in the morning and we were all still up playing cards and couldn't wait to hear about it!

Today our kids had some much-needed rest. Except for Molly and Davis, who went on rounds with Dr. Brady this morning, most of the others slept until 10! They needed it because we have been going since we landed in Nairobi!

Around mid-morning, we met the Manys and took a short hike down to the Tenwek River. We explored the area and had a rock skipping contest, and well as a distance contest. I think Jackson won both of them!

Down by the Tenwek River!

The Chai House: a place that serves WONDERFUL chai (tea) and snacks!
Along the way, we stopped at The Chai House, where we got drinks and snacks. Paul and Melissa got chai, a very delicious spiced Kenyan tea, and we all tried chapati, a type of bread/tortilla they make here. We relaxed for awhile and most of the group went down to the bridge over the hydro-electric dam. This is what supplies Tenwek's power!

Jackson shows off!

Made some new friends on the bridge

After the river walk, we went back for lunch at our guesthouse. Paul and Melissa decided to go donate blood while we are here, Tenwek Hospital is almost always in need of blood.

Later, at dinner, one of the pediatricians heard that we gave blood and asked if it was O+ by any chance. They were in need of O+ for a particular patient and they only had one bag of it left so they couldn't give this patient a blood transfusion, since they had to save the last one for an extreme emergency. Paul and I (Melissa) are both O+! (At least we are about 99% sure we are--ha!) So now hopefully this patient can receive our blood right away!

While we were donating, the kids played soccer with a few of the missionary kids. When Paul and I got there, we played ultimate frisbee and then football. This is such a great group of kids! Everyone had a good time and were good sports!

Get it, Annie!

break time!

Dirty feet after soccer!
The kids are out right now playing "blob" with the missionary kids, which is apparently some game they play in the dark. When they come back, we will have a devotion, prayer, and then play some cards if it's not too late! Dr. Brady is still on call so we will see if anything else crazy happens tonight!

Tomorrow is church!

Love,
Melissa
