Tenwek

Good evening! After a breakfast at the Java House in Nairobi, we made it safely to Tenwek with no incidents other than slow traffic on the highway that overlooks the Rift Valley. Most of the ride was spent singing songs and laughing.

(bad traffic on the road to Tenwek!)

(The Great Rift Valley)

(our first wildlife sighting! There were a ton of these!)

(overlooking the Great Rift Valley)

(Baboon on the road!)

There was also a herd of zebras that we passed! I didn't get a picture but I know some of the others did! Most of us have never seen zebras in the wild so it was really amazing to see them.

Tenwek itself is so beautiful! It is peaceful, quiet, and has many trees and flowering plants. Though this is technically their "winter," it is very mild. We arrived in the afternoon and got settled into our apartments in the guesthouse. There is a girls' apartment and a boys' apartment and both are very nice!

Later, Heath and Angela took us on a tour of the hospital and explained a bit about the mission of the hospital. We got to see the ICU, surgical theaters (operating rooms), maternity wing, NICU, and the pediatric ward. It was inspirational to hear about the mission and dedication of those serving here at Tenwek Hospital. God is at work and we are thankful to play a small part in that.

Tomorrow we will split into teams and shadow Dr. Brady and Dr. Many on rounds and even observe some surgeries. One of our more queasy team members will get to go to the pediatric ward and help feed and cuddle babies in the NICU! We are looking forward to what God will show us and teach us throughout our time here.

Love,
Melissa

**Parents and Friends, please note that the kids do not have wifi tonight but we will sign them up for accounts to use the internet tomorrow!
